Spoken Portraits

Sir Bob Scott, Greenwich:

I found the whole process liberating. I had long been thinking of trying to put some memories down but finding it impossible to put pen to paper. Working with Rosie on a spoken self-portrait of one important period of my life gave me the editorial focus and impetus I needed. The whole process was thoroughly enjoyable and now I have CDs to give to friends and family.

Jamie MacDonald, Kent:

Thank you so much for crafting such a lovingly edited collection of moments from [my parents’] lives woven so seamlessly together in to the most beautiful volume. I so appreciated your going all that way up to Skye to spend some time getting to know [them] so that they could speak in their own time for their spoken self-portraits. In capturing their voices so beautifully and with such clarity you have created one of the most treasured gifts I will ever receive. An heirloom painted of words. It was so exciting … to listen to in the car with my family on a long drive and felt very much like listening to a personal edition of desert island discs. Every story evoking wonderful childhood memories, each taking me on a rollercoaster of emotions as I learned things that neither have told me before. In many ways it was like hearing them in a new way.

Donna, West Hampstead:

The Spoken Portrait of my mother was done as a 90th birthday gift. She absolutely loves it! However, it has in fact been as much a gift to ourselves as to her. We now have this wonderful story of her life, in her own words, to treasure. Rosie was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end and she really came to understand her “sitter”. Rosie’s gentle, encouraging manner with my mother was especially appreciated.

Shola, Swiss Cottage:

Rosie interviewed my father just a few months before his 80th birthday. He had often been taciturn about certain aspects of his past and while there were many questions I had always wanted to ask, somehow, I never seemed to get around to asking. Everything about the process with Rosie was smooth, from the early communication where we discussed the parameters of the interview to the set up on the day.

I already knew this would be a gift for myself and my siblings. What I hadn’t anticipated was how much of a gift we were giving to my father. To be able to wander at leisure through long forgotten memories, was an indulgence he hadn’t allowed himself for years. I think it gave him great pleasure to reminisce about the past and I suspect he spoke more freely to Rosie, who has a warm and easy charm, than he would have done if any of his children had attempted the exercise. Suffice to say he had a smile on his face for the rest of the day. We don’t get to keep our loved ones forever but this recording of my father’s life in his own words, is the next best thing. A perfectly preserved moment in time that will hopefully be appreciated by generations of our family to come. I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that it is one of the most precious gifts you could ever give to yourself and those you love.

Mary, Greenwich:

Mum has wonderful stories and doesn’t realise how well she tells them. I’ve always wanted to find a way to capture some of her memories. So I invited Rosie to collaborate with my mum on her spoken memoirs. They developed its scope together in a way that resulted in a very joyful portrait. Rosie used broadcast quality recording equipment and edited it beautifully. It’s something for mum to be proud of and for us all to treasure.

Audio Tributes

Andrew Burke, Chief Executive of the London Sinfonietta (who commissioned an Audio Tribute):

You did an amazing job – and took all the worry and administration away from us.

Clare, London (who commissioned an Audio Tribute during lockdown):

After my sister’s wedding was postponed [due to lockdown] we decided it would be lovely to organise a vocal tribute for her and her fiancé from their closest family and friends to let them know that we were all thinking of them. Rosie was brilliant and so efficient turning the project around within a very short time. She contacted everyone to arrange to speak, helped them feel at ease during the recording sessions and managed to achieve such a brilliant quality of sound through easy to access online software – so we could all contribute from the comfort of our own homes. My sister and future brother in law absolutely loved it – we can’t recommend Rosie highly enough.

Lisa, Hertfordshire (recipient of the Audio Tribute during lockdown):

Thank you so much for putting together the lockdown special. Everyone knew how disappointed we were when we had to postpone the wedding (I’ve been waiting 11 years!!!). It really was brilliant to have my friends and family say those wonderful things. It really brightened up our day/week/month/year! I laughed a lot, I cried a lot, and smiled till my face couldn’t take it!

Margareta, Cheshire (recipient of an Audio Tribute):

Thank you so much for developing the wonderful CD to celebrate my birthday! It was extremely imaginative of you to get it all together. The contributions from my friends of many years were most moving.
